MERCOSUR

MERCOSUR

The member countries of the Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR), namely Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay as full members (plus Venezuela, currently suspended)*, are also involved in migration-related agreements. The mercosur citizenship statute and action plan greatly facilitates the movements of people among member states (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay), granting citizens the right to stay at another member state for two years without need to justify their stay. The agreement over residence for MERCOSUR member-state nationals, Bolivia and Chile (Acuerdo sobre residencia para nacionales de los Estados Partes del MERCOSUR, Bolivia y Chile) allows for nationals of the member-states to request and obtain temporary or permanent visas in these countries, also equating their labor rights to those of national workers in the receiving countries within the block.¹
